PeteStop® on Water Chiller Pipeline

Introduction

A U.S. based facility needed contingency equipment added to an existing chill water system, requiring the addition of block valves to be added in new chillers and generators. The chill water system operates at 30 PSI and 45° F, with managed flow of service through 14” and 16” carbon steel pipe.

Problem

  1. The system was not isolatable at the locations designated for expansion (14” and 16” chill water pipes).
  2. The system needed to be isolated anywhere from a couple hours to days.
  3. An effective isolation seal was critical for long durations.
  4. Limited space environment to execute line stops.

The Solution

The mechanical contractor contacted Petersen Products to begin the process of review and application engineering. The operating conditions were submitted, inclusive of all orientations and clearances of the proposed isolation locations.

  1. Petersen Products Technical Sales and Engineering prescribed the PeteStop® 129-HP Series High Pressure Inflatable Line Stop System for the 16” and 14” applications.
  2. The technical data provided by Petersen Products gave guidance on the minimum required hot tap hole so the contractor could procure the nozzle/ fitting required to launch the inflatable.

Result

The facility and mechanical contractor agree on using inflatable line stops to isolate the required portion of the cooling water system.

  1. Project consisted of isolating (16) 16” pipe and (2) 14” pipe. Multiple PeteStop® inflatable line stops were ordered for contingency.
  2. Fittings were ordered, delivered and installed prior to arriving to perform the hot taps.
  3. At scheduled intervals, the mechanical contractor would launch the PeteStop®, provide a workable seal and release the pipeline to the facility for the needed improvements for various lengths of time.
  4. All 18 inflatable line stops were installed with no system disruption or safety issues allowing the facility to complete the contingency equipment addition seamlessly.

PeteStop® inflatable line stops solved this contractor’s complex problem. Since then, this mechanical contractor has added the product as an essential tool for solving customers’ pipeline plugging needs. Petersen Products trains and certifies users on the PeteStop® inflatable line stop system.
